Yes we all know Bear from his TV show – Born Suvivor. He is the man who parachutes into some of the most inhospitable and dodgy places on earth – spending the next few days using his bush skills to make his way back to civilisation. During the experience, he is followed and filmed by a recording crew, and has picked up the habit of eating the most disgusting local creature he can lay his hands on!
But, what many of you may not know is what Bear did before this TV show ..
“Facing Up” is a book which covers Bear Grylls life from the time he left school, to the point where he returned from climbing Everest. Educated in Eton, Bear joined the British army and went on to earn his place in the elite SAS – the British Special forces. While on duty in North Africa, Bear was took part in a military exercise and suffered a serious parachuting accident. The result of the fall was a break in his .... and an honourable discharge.
Bear then found himself searching for a new challenge and discovered it in Everest. The book goes on to detail his journey from preparing and training for his expedition in the UK - to his time on the mountain, culminating in his successful summit.
“Facing Up” paints a vivid and enjoyable picture for readers looking for an escape or inspiration. At the time when he summited Everest Bear was only 21 years old, making him the Briton to do so at the time.
Praise for the book include Ranulph Finnes “ A Remarkable Journey to the Summit of Mount Everest”
Rating: 9/10 – excellent
