How much does it cost to Run a Marathon?

Running a Marathon is one of the most rewarding experiences that a person have. It requires hard work and months of training, but crossing that finish line makes every moment of it worthwhile.

Unlike most sports which can require a large financial investment, a Marathon requires more of a time investment than anything else. Of course you could choose to go out and buy the most expensive and swankiest gear available, but this article is simply going to look at the average cost of running a Marathon

   Entry Fee

Most Marathons have an entry fee of somewhere between €20 - €50, depending on their popularity and costs etc..

   Running Shoes:

A good pair of running shoes can vary greatly in price, but the most important factor is to make sure that you use a good quality pair which provide adequate support and shock absorption (reducing the risk of injury and increasing your enjoyment when out on the road). A great time to pick up shoes can be during the sales.

Usually when Adidas or Asics release a new line of runners, stores will begin to discount the old line to clear out stock. This is an excellent opportunity to pick up a great pair of runners at a bargin!

Running shoes: €40 - €110

   Running Apparel:

The type of running clothes you use can vary greatly depending on the climate you train in and the time of year. The most basic elements of running kit are usually – a pair of shorts, a good quality T-Shirt and possibly a high-visibility belt or jacket. Most people will have the above sitting in their wardrobe, but for those who may need to purchase new kit we would put the price tags at the following:

•Running Shorts - €20

•Good Quality T-Shirt - €20

•High-Visibility belt - €15

As people need to eat regardless of whether they are training or not, we have not included the cost of energy gels in our total. But for those who may be interested, the price of energy gels usually works out around €1.20 for each gel – containing approximately 160-200 calories.

Working on the above assumption we would work out the average financial cost of running a Marathon at a very reasonable:

Average Total: * €135 (excluding extra travel costs) *

When you consider that completing a Marathon is an achievement you will keep with you forever, along with the huge health benefits that come with proper training - this is a very reasonable price to pay

Endurance: The ability or strength to continue or last, despite fatigue, stress, or other adverse conditions; stamina
